Friday July, 10
Dad was able to see the mountains all lit up "Like god turned a flashlight on" as he says. Of course you have to be
up around 3 o' clock in the morning to see it so I rarely see them like that. At 9:00 he woke me up so I got dressed and
got out of the tent and into the brawl with the mosquitos. After putting the tent away we and getting all the bags back on
the bike we set back out into the blazing sun. Along the way we met a biker named John who told us that there was a french
bakery up the street about 40 miles away. Well at 43 miles it started raining so we had to pench up tent inside a little
hide-away beside the road. Trust me we found the herd this time. The mosquitos havnt been this bad since the day we met
the chinese bicyclist way back when. It also turns out that dad's rain-proof tarp is no longer rain proof. We had to
throw our rain jackets on top of the tarp to keep the water out of the tent. It was a awfull night. You couldnt touch the
edges of the tent or your sleeping bag would get soaked(and trust me a wet sleeping bag is not fun). Plus we had to us towels
to soak up the water drops before they hit the sleeping bags for an hour before dad got the idea for the rain jackets.
We was lucky to get any sleep at all.
Saturday July, 11
Waking up with sore backs, we ran out of the tent, threw everything in the bags and flew out of that mosquito hole.
Sure enough 3 miles later we found the bakery. I was hoping for doughnuts but my hopes where not fulfilled. The best sugary
treat they had was cinnimon rolls. We ordered 2 full crepes(skinny plate sized pancakes wraped around ham and cheese),
2 cinnimon rolls, two sodas, and a big cookie. We had to stay in the shop after eating becuase we was waiting out the awfull
rain. After the end of the FIFA soccer tournament(no we really didn't care about it but others where watching it) we headed
back out. We rode a good 41 miles today when we reached a rest area(two outhouses and a viewpoint) at the top of a big hill
and we asked a couple how long until another town. Not only did they tell us but they made us peanut butter jeally sandwhiches
and gave us some grahham crackers. They were so cool. Their names were David and Katlyn. They lived in Homer and was doing
was doing a bike ride in San Diego. Katlyn even told us about the giant slugs. She said they was called banana slugs. They
had a black dog that was very freindly. AFter eating the sandwhiches(Thank you so much) they found out that the next
eating area was in burwash landing. They even gave us a great map which was another gift from them. Such good people are
hard to come by. But after that they had to head back home so we said good-bye and found a great spot inside of some green
spruces(cousin's of palm tree's) that held great protection from the rain and we was able to use a tarp that dad found
covering a road sign to cover the tent and made sure tonight we would stay dry.
Sunday July, 12
Today we got up with a full nights sleep. We also didn;t have to worry about mosquitos for once. After heading out
we meet a group of three bikers. their names were Houston, sue and Bruce. They slept 12 miles down the road and told us
that the next town is only 16 miles away. Sure enough, in about 15 miles burwash landing comes into view... but it didn't
have a restaruant. We asked how far the next town was and a few bikers told us that it was only 10 miles away. Sure
enough it was. Not only was there a resteruant but there was also a motel. We ate some lunch and grabbed a room. The
shower sure felt good after so long. Afterwords we had some cheeseburgers in the room and now I'm working on the blog. Im
finally done after 1 a.m Yukon time. Ill talk to you guys later. Love ya.
Monday July, 13
Got up, packed and out of the room. Got some breakfast and saw the 2nd worst thing a biker can see while on the road.
The canadian flag was blowing so hard that the pole was near to breaking. The trees were just about touching the ground.
I think we even heard tornado warning signs blowing. It wasn't even raining. We tried to ride out but we could only get up
to 5 miles on flat land. "There is no way we can ride out in weather like this" Dad said as we headed back to the hotel and
dished out another $99 bucks to grab another room.
Tuesday July, 14
Got up and it was raining. Of course the wind was blowing hard enough to lift a cow so we grabbed another room. Hey,
another night of tv and relaxing works for me. It rained well into the evening.
Wednesday July, 15
Yes we was able to ride today. After leaving the room and eating breakfast we set out to haines juctions which was
only 66 miles away. We was able to run into a hotdog stall along the way and grabbed 2 giant hotdogs. Dad sat in this wooden
throne style chair while eating. While we was eating a bird landing on the beanch next to us and just looked at us like
"food?" so we gave it some bread. "Thanks!' it said as it flew away to its nest with the bread in its mouth. After finishing
up the hotdogs and leaving the bird some bread on the table we got up and headed on to try to get out of the wind. We was
riding right next to the largest lake in the yukon which was 40 miles long. We had hunches that when we crossed a bridge
at the end of the lake the wind would stop. Sure enough, after crossing the bridge it calmed down like a crying baby was just
given a pacifier. It stayed pretty calm all the to haines junction. When we arrived we set up tent right next to a police
station. We tried to get a cell to sleep in but no officers were inside the building. After setting up tent, we headed to the
local resteruant and grabbed some cheeseburgers. After that we headed back to the tent but a little side story happened.
while relaxing in the tent Dad saw a girl sitting on some benches by herself on the top of the hlil. "She's all by herself"
Dad said as he showed me were she was. "Go talk to her, youll be sorry you didn't" he said. "Fine" I said as I grabbed the
camera to pretend I was just taking pictures as I walked up there. She was actually a Japanee lady who was just looking at the mountains and reading a map. She look away from me as I sat down on the beanch next to her and took a picture. I said "Enjoying the view?" and she looked at me and said "Yes". We was able to start some conversations but it was after a minute of thinking of what to talk about next. After about 30 minutes she packed up and started leaving. Thats when I told her it was good to meet her and my name was keith. She said her name was Saiyoka and we bothed waved good-bye as we left to go back to I headed back to my tent and she headed back to hers down the street to a campground. After that we went to bed.
Thursday July, 16
We woke up and eat at the resteruant across the street. After eating we headed over to a bakery and grabbed some baked
goods(i had a apple and a strawberry struddle) and afterwords we headed over to a luandrymat and dried out the tent and sleeping
bags(due to our stupidity by not throwing the black tarp over the tent even though we saw rain clouds coming) and after that
we headed back to the bakery to get on the wi-fi. sure enough, look who was sitting outside. It was Saiyoka. I went over to
talk to her while my dad talked to Tina. We pretty much talked about japanese and american culture and about life in general.
Dad finally came over and talked with us. After talking for a while she took some picture with us and exhange skype information
and headed down the road. We Road for about 40 miles when we ran into a girl biker who was biking really fast. She told us
about this campsite that was up ahead. We rode up to the campsite and there was signs saying "Bear in area, no tenting". We
tried to find the girl but she dissapeared. So we biked out of the campsite and went back down the road. We then see a sign
for a historical site with a gifthop. We reached the area and went down this dirtroad and found out it was a indian fishing
village. We got there and we met some other bikers who was staying there. We asked the people who owned the camp if we could
camp out back with the other bikers. They said sure so we set up tent beside the other bikers(they was a guy and girl couple)
After setting up tent we went over to thi firepit where other people were staying and we met Tyler and Dennis(best freinds)
and they took us over to the birthday party that was going on down the river. We was able to try some salmon and some
salmon eggs. They even had cooked steaks. After eating some food we had cake and sung happy birthday to the guy who was
turing another year older. After that Dad and the guys all had some beer and I hung out by the fire with them until I got
really tired and went back to the tent and fell asleep.
